Freshmen settle into life on Danforth Campus

In August, the university welcomed a freshman class of approximately 1,640 students who come from across the United States and 26 countries. Julie Shimabukuro, director of admissions, calls the Class of 2016 “a terrific group of students” who are “bright, talented and already engaged in the community.”

McLeod’s Way dedicated Sept. 15

McLeod’s Way, a new landscaped gathering place on the South 40 honoring the late James E. “Jim” McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, was dedicated Sept. 15. Shaun C. Koiner, a 2004 alumnus and one of McLeod’s former students, spoke during the ceremony.

Danforth Center on Religion & Politics hosts open house Monday

The John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics is hosting an open house from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in its new Umrath Hall location. The celebration offers the community a chance to meet new faculty, mingle with center staff and get an update on progress.

Alzheimer’s breaks brain networks’ coordination

Scientists at the School of Medicine have taken one of the first detailed looks into how Alzheimer’s disease disrupts coordination among several of the brain’s networks. Beau Ances, MD, assistant professor of neurology, is the studys senior author.

The Public Interest Law and Policy Speakers Series continues at noon today with Goodwin Liu, JD, associate justice of the Supreme Court of California, on “Federal Law in State Court: Handling Conflicts over Arbitration, Immigration, and Constitutional Rights” in Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom in Anheuser-Busch Hall.

Competition offers $25,000 for innovative ideas

The School of Engineering & Applied Science’s new Discovery Competition provides teams of undergraduates the forum to explore their entrepreneurial interests with support from mentors, to use their creativity to develop solutions for real-world problems and to compete for financial resources that could help turn ideas into businesses.

Volleyball finishes 3-1 at Wittenberg Fall Classic

The No. 1 volleyball team suffered its first loss against No. 7 Hope College last weekend at the Wittenberg Fall Classic. The Bears (13-1) next travel to Chicago for the first UAA round robin Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30.
